The last 100 years
Mendota is nestled within 65 acres of bluff property overlooking the rivers. Minnesota's two oldest historic homes, the Sibley House and the Fairbault House are within two minutes walking distance. Historic St. Peters Church, the state's oldest church, overlooks Mendota and the rivers. Descendants of the Dakota tribe, French-Canadians and many other nationalities make up the present day population of Mendota. Commonly, homes are sold within families which has contributed to our "small town" community spirit. We have no curbside delivery of the mail and that's the way we like it. Our post office serves as an everyday informal meeting place where residents catch up on the latest news. Our jailhouse and city hall building is across the street.
As of the 1990 census our population was 164.
The Mendota Bridge
When constructed in 1926 the bridge was the world's longest poured concrete bridge. Often called the "mile long bridge" it is actually 4,119 feet long. Bridge pilings were driven to a depth of 300 feet without reaching bed rock. The view from the center of the bridge is outstanding.
